Achievment Data so far

The nature of my inquiry is about shifting high achieving boys who are reluctant writers. The lack of motivation is stopping these boys from reaching the levels that they are able to achieve. The graph below shows the Term 1 data. These were lower than the 2016 data.

With the new focus and change in pedagogy the data for Term 2 shows a shift already. The focus of Design for Real Learning (DRL) has engaged and encouraged the learners to be more motivated. The graph below shows the current shift.

These are tracking to more where these learners were tracking in 2016 and some of them above where they were previously. My next steps are to use DRL for across curriculum planning to lift the standard of writing in other subjects.

Using experiences to design for writing

Motivation is the key to engaging boys into writing. If they are not interested in the writing then they will not put the effort into it. When you can hook them into interesting ways and experiences in writing the effort and engagement will follow. I have design a real context in which the learners can hook into. Giving choice, independence and a challenging purpose will provide the motivation.

I will compare the piece of writing at the end of this small unit to the writing from previous sessions to see the difference and gather learner voice around the experience.

Manaiakalani Digital Immersion - Creativity Video

At Stonefields the Year 4/5/6 team value and plan for creativity

Manaiakalani Inquriy Learn Create Share Model

Thanks to Karen Ferguson who shared this with the Manaiakalani Cluster. This will be very useful for a new Manaiakalani member. I am going to document as I go to share my learning back with everyone.

Focusing Inquiry - “What is important (and therefore worth spending time on) given where my students are at?”
Gather evidence

Identify Trends

Teaching Inquiry - “What strategies (evidence-based) are most likely to help my students learn?”

Make a plan

Try new things

Learning Inquiry - “What has happened as a result of the changes in teaching, and what are the implications for future teaching? ...We need people to provide us with different perspectives and to share their ideas, knowledge, and experiences.”
